I recently read Mr. Becker's The WHY Book as part of an assignment from my marriage counselor. The book opened my eyes to many of the challenges I have faced in my marriage. My wife is now reading the book with me and I am going through each chapter and Q&A with a goal of creating intimacy in my marriage. I have not come across a book before that so fundamentally helps me to understand my interest in avoiding intimacy. For those who have struggled with pornography or other sexual addiction, reading this book could be transformative for you - as it has been for me.

Helping sexually addicted men recover is my passion. Being of service confers meaning and purpose to my life.

In 1981, I canvased all of Harvard University's libraries in search of information on sexual addiction. The effort was futile. When Dr. Carnes published, Out of the Shadows in 1983, his research filled a virtual void. His work was new, exciting, and enlightening. While his books favored the mental health community, I looked forward to the day when his work would be presented in a literary style pleasing to the average person.

A few years later, I began to restate some of Dr. Carnes' work. Dr. Carnes read drafts of my first two books and approved them for publication by Gentle Path Press, a publication company owned by Dr. Carnes. His professional research standards are impressive. He was the first in the field of sex addiction to apply statistical analysis to validate his hypotheses. His work is based on statistically significant populations. His research findings are reliable and applicable in the clinical setting. His books have inspired a new breed of therapist who has selected sexual addiction therapy as their primary focus.

Rephrasing Dr. Carnes' work opened new publication opportunities. His fundamental concepts were not changed, only the style of presentation was modified. The senior editor at Gentle Path Press and the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals (ITAP) has approved, on behalf of Dr. Carnes, use of his concepts and adaptations for my books*.

About the Author

Paul Becker, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), practices in Fairfax City, Virginia. Earlier in life he served 36 years as an Executive in the Federal Civil Service. To fulfill his pledge to "give back" he obtained another Master's Degree in Counseling Education from Virginia Tech and embarked on a counseling and literary career. His recent book,What a Woman Needs to Know about Male Sexual Addiction, guides women who find their partners have strayed from the marriage contract, to an understanding of the why and how of his addiction and the choices women face as they move forward with their lives.
