[In reviewing of my book, “It Doesn’t Just Happen, An Educational Workbook for Sex Offender Treatment Programs,” it has been suggested I am a “fraud” for stating my credentials as a psychologist. This is factually incorrect. As acknowledged by the media in a retraction and the judge at sentencing, I have earned a doctorate and masters degrees in the areas of psychology and neuroscience. Some reviewers complain I am not a “registered psychologist.” I am not sure what a "registered psychologist" is, but I assume what is meant is that I am not a licensed psychologist, nor do I present myself as being licensed. Psychology is a broad academic discipline. Academic psychologists write on a wide range of subjects. No license is required to contribute to an academic field. In the case of my book, my contribution is creating a series of educational exercises to be conducted with a therapist or facilitator. In no way did I invent a new therapeutic program. Sex offender treatment programs have been in existence for decades. I didn’t recommend how a therapist deliverers therapy or the approach taken. I organized and presented materials hoping to allow for a better educational experience for those in such programs. Other then improvements in presentation, the material existed long before I began my efforts to better present such material. My intent is to assist those in treatment in making the maximum progress. Hopefully this clarifies my intent, my work product, and my legitimate right to comment on this area of study without being wrongly labeled "fraudulent."] "It Doesn’t Just Happen," and related workbooks were written to help the many people who struggle with destructive sexual behavior and who have lived a life consumed by secrecy, shame, and confusion over their behavior. The author, David Scratchley, is a convicted sex offender who spent almost five years in prison for a sex and drug offense. David Scratchley personal experiences as a sex offender who has successfully completed treatment in conjunction with his advanced training in the behavioral sciences, Scratchley has a Ph.D. in psychology and neuroscience, makes these workbooks a unique resource. By discussing these topics in an atmosphere of acceptance in pursuit of understanding, rather than condemnation, those who suffer can see that recovery is possible. The first step in healing is recognition of the problem followed by a move to action to intervene on destructive sexual behaviors before it is too late. This book has been written for people struggling with destructive sexual behavior who are participating in Sex Offender Treatment. The workbook is designed to be processed in a group setting with a facilitator trained in Sex Offender Treatment. If you are struggling with the issues presented in this book series, then it is highly recommended that you immediately seek the help of a trained professional. Detailed information on destructive sexual behavior can be found in the companion text, the revised, second edition of "It Doesn’t Just Happen." The educational exercises presented in the workbook are based on the author’s professional and personal experiences in sex offender treatment. Given that many forms of destructive sexual behavior are similar to addictive disorders seen in drug and alcohol addiction, many of these exercises represent an extension of techniques with proven track records in helping people to regain control of their behavior. The combination of these two approaches makes the It Doesn’t Just Happen Educational Workbook for Sex Offender Treatment a unique resource for those coping with these difficult problems.
