Executives stood dumbfounded in the parking lot, trying to figure out what happened to their advertising agency’s building. Some said it looked like it had been packaged for shipping. Others thought the city condemned it, then boarded up the windows with White-out. Whatever happened, it was obvious that Rochester’s largest and most prestigious ad agency had been the target of... well, something. The large picture windows covered with gigantic sections of blank white cardboard. On the other side, there were messages, in big black letters. They were aimed right into the offices of the company executives who were apparently too busy to read John C. Wolfe’s cover letters. Now they had no choice. For an entire day, their office view was a six-foot copy of Wolfe’s resume and a collection of slogans touting his work ethic, his creativity and his unorthodox way of getting things done. The stunt – in 1990, just as Wolfe was starting his writing career -- made it into the newspapers and Wolfe got a job the next day. Not bad for an idea that was conceived and carried out totally drunk. It's the least interesting story in John C. Wolfe’s first book, “You Can’t Die: A Day of Clarity.” In fact, it’s barely mentioned in a 300-page story that repeatedly leaves the reader wondering, “How did we get here?” Shocking developments happen in quick succession without giving the reader a break until it’s time to laugh or cry. Then, suddenly, the reader is standing amid the rubble of the World Trade Center on 9/11, choking a lawyer in open court or “drawing a picture of his disease” in a mental institution. Wolfe’s first book isn’t a memoir; it’s a literary medley of crimes against normalcy, like the close captioning of a wombat’s body cam. The events in this book -- sometimes hilarious, sometimes frustrating, always shocking – would be unbelievable if the most outrageous incidents hadn’t been memorialized on film by Governor Pataki’s unsuspecting photographer. When the final page is turned, both the reader and the author are desperately asking, “When’s the other shoe going to drop?” Neither of them knows what to expect until they get to the author’s second book, “The Funny Thing About Being Sober,” which, once again, leaves the reader crying, laughing and wondering, as the author’s clean and sober life proves even more chaotic than the alcohol-fueled one he left behind.
