Charles Manson's fiancé probably has it.Ted Bundy's wife / groupie Carol Boone suffered from the same problem, and it was one reason why Karla Homolka assisted Paul Bernardo in torture, murder, and rape, to include her own sister. They each had a paraphilia (an intense sexual arousal to an atypical situation, object, or person), the paraphilia being hybristophilia, or sexual arousal by being with a criminal. True crime author RJ Parker examines this phenomenon in his latest book, Serial Killer Groupies.

"Just about every serial killer has a groupie attached to him or her," RJ Parker explains. Parker interviewed Paul Bernardo, husband of Karla Homolka; the Canadians were dubbed "The Barbie & Ken murderers" because of their good looks. Bernardo is a serial rapist and murderer/torturer of teenagers and young women, yet he receives "a couple hundred love letters every month," says Parker, "a far cry from the several hundred a week he received when he was first arrested."

Parker explains one of the reasons people are attracted to serial killers, both in and out of prison, is because they suffer from hybristophilia. In Serial Killer Groupies, Parker explains hybristophilia as "people who are aroused sexually by being with someone who commits violent crimes." He believes this may be the case with Homolka and Carol Anne Boone; the latter married Ted Bundy and fathered his child during Bundy's incarceration.

Author Parker explains there are other reasons a person may become a serial killer groupie. They may have a fantasy of "changing" the killer with love and compassion. They see the inmate as the "perfect" partner: They know where they are (prison) and the inmate is not "cheating" and cannot leave. The groupies may feel a nurturing instinct toward the criminal. Or they are someone who needs drama in their lives, and what better way to gain attention or cause problems than announcing they are married to, or "dating"/ in love with, a notorious inmate?

In his article Passion Victim, Dr. Mark D. Griffiths writes, "hybristophilia was defined by the sexologist Professor John Money as a sexual paraphilia in which an individual derives sexual arousal and pleasure from having a sexual partner who is known to have 'committed an outrage or crime, such as rape, murder, or armed robbery.'" It is also called the "Bonnie and Clyde Syndrome" RJ Parker adds.

Hybristophilia is more common in females. The female hybristophiles are the actual crime planners, pushing their partner to do illegal things in order to create arousal. There are two types of hybristophiles: 1. "Aggressives" assist the criminals in committing the crime. Rosemary West actively participated (with her husband Fred) in numerous murders and sexual assaults. 2. "Passives" have no desire to break the law but are sexually attracted to those who do. Many witnesses report Bonnie Parker never took part in gunfights or robberies; she preferred to wait in the getaway car or somewhere away from the crime scene. She never shot not killed during the depression-era crime spree with Clyde Barrow.
