The secret service gradually infiltrates the lush life of May-May, an ambitious scientist and mother to a young boy. Her world falls apart when she is forcibly admitted to a mental hospital, where she is diagnosed with schizophrenia.

May-May seems to be living in two worlds: the normal world where everyone goes about their day-to-day lives, and another world - the world of the secret service. It is during this period of her life that her mission arises, which she still pursues to this day: achieving world peace.

With the love and help of her family, the support of caregivers in the mental health sector, and by following her calling, May-May eventually recovers. She now wants to contribute to "A World in Which All Children Can Play".

This is an autobiography that gives insight into the working of the human psyche.

I bough the book because I have had psychotic episodes and wanted to compare my experience with someone else's. May-May explains very well how the psychotic mind works and I feel less 'mad' knowing that I'm not the only one to have 'strange' experiences. It is a very real, detailed account of her inner life and struggles, of how Western psychiatry sees mental illness (something to be eradicated rather than understood). I was heart-broken by the loss of her family life and her job. I was angered by the despotic ways of Western psychiatry who locked her up, drugged her up by force and kept her prisoner, in agreement with her family who wanted 'the best' for her, the best according to them of course! I am glad I never disclosed my experiences to mental health professionals. Her sense of isolation and depression is something I can relate to, as is her spiritual experiences. Thank God I read the books of Stan Grof about psychosis as spiritual emergence. I hope May-May writes more about her conversations with Christ one day and that she will be honoured rather than judged. - Catherine

About the Author

May-May Meijer (1972) wrote her doctoral dissertation in the field of Communication Science at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. She is the founder of the organization Peace SOS, which supports soft forces in countries that are currently embroiled in violent conflict. Besides this, she publishes work about her psychotic vulnerability in Schizophrenia Bulletin from Oxford University Press and on the Dutch website PsychoseNet.
