From Library Journal
This is an authoritative work on the history of psychotherapeutic theory, research, practice, and training. Laudably, this work is not self-congratulatory--indeed, several articles are sharply critical of psychotherapy's acceptance of societal norms and its treatment of women and minorities. The title is a bit confining, since the book also serves as a useful guide to current theory and practice. (N.B: CIP subject headings do not reflect this contemporary aspect.) This is an essential purchase for university or research libraries supporting programs in clinical psychology, counseling, or psychiatry. Since the book is relatively jargon-free, college libraries should also consider for undergraduate social science collections. Joel Kovel's A Complete Guide to Therapy: From Psychotherapy to Behavior Modification ( LJ 7/76) is still an adequate source for most public libraries.
