the epic journeys that Odysseus undertook. He and his men were sailing home, which involved passing by an island inhabited by sirens, mermaids whose seductive calls had lured many sailors to the island. Upon arriving on the island, the sirens would kill them. Understanding this, Odysseus had his men fill their ears with wax, which when hardened, would prevent them from hearing the sirens' calls.

Though he sealed his ears with wax as well, Odysseus ordered his men to take the additional step of tying him to the ships masts. As they came within hearing distance of the sirens' calls, the wax in Odysseus's ears began to melt, allow him to hear their calls. Under the spell of the sirens' calls, Odysseus ordered his men to untie him so that he could seek the sirens out. Fortunately, his men could not hear his orders as the wax in their ears did not melt. Because of this, the Odysseus and his men safely sailed out of range of the sirens' calls.

Developing self-discipline is not easy, as you are bound to experience temptations that will lure you of course. Distractions are normal and you will be enticed by them. What is most important is that you regain course and continue onward. In fact, you can learn self-discipline even if you never heard of these principles. Just challenging yourself just as Odysseus did will create the fertile grounds for self-discipline. The most important thing is that you be willing to take the journey.
